With the deadline for H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016  (MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE INNOVATIVE TRAINING NETWORK) submissions passed it is time to have a look at the first statistics provided by the European Commission. This call is part of the Horizon 2020 programme  with the aim to train a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative Early-Stage Eesearchers (ESRs).

As expected, the number of ITN submissions has increased, although the increase was not as pronounced as anticipated. Compared to the previous year there were 44 more submissions (1611 this year and 1567 the previous year). The number may seem insignificant – but considering that the available total budget remains the same as last year (€370 million), it will still mean that last years' success rates will not be reached in this year. The success rates seen last year were 7.8% for ETN, 9.6% for EID and 9.2% for EJD. The good news however is that the budget will be increased next year. There will be a total of €430 million available for the MSCA-ITN-2017 topic (ETN: €370 million,  EJD €32 million and EID: €28 million).

The European Commission has provided a breakdown of the total submissions in 2016:

•    European Training Networks (ETN): 1,363 proposals (85%)
•    European Industrial Doctorates (EID): 166 proposals (10%)
•    European Joint Doctorates (EJD): 82 proposals (5%)

This distribution across the different ITN modes is similar to the one observed last year (ETN: 84%, EID: 10% and EJD: 6%).

accelopment has been successfully involved in the preparation of ITN proposals for several years. Our knowledge and experience in writing proposals and presenting the ideas in the best possible way once again proved to be invaluable. In the last round of submissions, accelopment was able to help secure funding for the two proposals EXCILIGHT  and PEARRL. Both projects are European Training Networks (ETN) and were funded under the 2015 call. We participate as a Partner Organisation (formerly Associated Partner) and a subcontractor for project management and dissemination.
