Funding News

The EU research funds for Switzerland have been frozen as a result of the recent Swiss vote to reduce immigration. The Swiss Federal Council has acknowledged the decision of the European Commission to suspend Switzerland’s association to the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation ‘Horizon 2020’. Instead, the European Commission gave Switzerland third-country status from 2014 on. Swiss entities will now be treated as third country entities that are not automatically eligible for funding under Horizon 2020. As an initial substitute to the European funding scheme, the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) is now working on the details of a temporary backup scheme. One possible option is that funds for contributions to the EU framework programme will be paid directly to researchers in Switzerland. This scheme will safeguard the highly international nature of research in Switzerland until a new agreement with the EU is reached.
