With the launch of the European Green Deal in December 2019, the European Commission combines far-reaching actions, policies and investments under the umbrella of making Europe climate neutral in 2050. By turning climate and environmental threats into opportunities, the Green Deal supports economic growth while protecting resources at the same time.
The Green Deal is composed of nine policy areas: Biodiversity, From Farm to Fork, Sustainable agriculture, Clean energy, Sustainable industry, Building and renovating, Sustainable mobility, Eliminating pollution and Climate action. The European Green Deal can change today’s world with the combined commitment of these areas and the needed funding of research and innovation.
Obviously, appropriate funding is needed to achieve the EU’s ambitious objective. The European Green Deal Investment Plan (EGDIP) defines how the planned €1 trillion will likely be mobilised from different European and national sources. Given this substantial funding and the urgency of the Green Deal, it is unsurprising that the first European Green Deal call had already opened in September 2020. Many more calls can be expected soon, addressing the UNs’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Keep in mind that not only research projects funded by EU Green Deal calls will be affected. The European Commission declared that “all EU actions and policies will have to contribute to the European Green Deal objectives”. Therefore, whatever your research project, you need to address and consider its support towards a climate-neutral Europe.
