New EU funding opportunities for energy-related projects

3rd May 2022 at 1:03 pm

Last week several new energy-related call topics were opened by the European Commission. With a deadline on 6 September 2022, there is enough time to get prepared and submit applications.

The largest number of newly released call topics belong to the European Union’s new “Batteries Partnership” and address the development of future battery materials and technologies. The ten topics are a mix of Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) focusing on lower technology readiness levels and Innovation Actions (IA), which address more mature technologies closer to the market. In addition, there is one Coordination and Support Action (CSA) which is intended to coordinate and connect battery research across Europe. The following table provides an overview of all these call topics and the expected budget and the anticipated number of projects to be funded for each of them.

Call topicTypeTitleEU contribution per project estimation (EUR)Anticipated number of funded projects
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D2-01-01IASustainable processing and refining of battery grade graphiteAround 5 M2
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D2-01-02RIAInterface and electron monitoring for the engineering of new and emerging battery technologiesAround 5 M2
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D2-01-03RIAFurthering the development of a materials acceleration platform for sustainable batteries (combining AI, big data, autonomous synthesis robotics, high throughput testing)Around 20 M1

HORIZON-CL5-2022-D2-01-10RIAStreamlined collection and reversed logistics, fully automated, safe, and cost-efficient sorting, dismantling and second use before recyclingAround 5 M3

The second batch of newly released call topics belongs to Destination 4 “Efficient sustainable and inclusive energy use” of Cluster 5 – Climate, Energy and Mobility (see our related blog post). Three Innovation Actions focus on energy management and energy efficiency in buildings and two Research and Innovation Actions on high-temperature heat in industrial applications. The table below summarises the topics.

HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-01-01IADemand response in energy-efficient residential buildings4-6 M2
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-01-02IARenewable-intensive, energy positive homes4-6 M2
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-01-03IASmarter buildings for better energy performance4-6 M2
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-01-04RIADevelopment and pilot demonstration of heat upgrade technologies with supply temperature in the range 150-250°C3-5 M2
HORIZON-CL5-2022-D4-01-05RIADevelopment of high temperature thermal storage for industrial applications3-4 M2

Last but not least, a new topic under the Horizon Europe “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission” was opened, also with a deadline on 6 September 2022. The overarching aim of this “Cities Mission” is to support 100 European cities to become climate-neutral by 2030. In the newly opened topic, research and innovation addressing the mobility aspects of this transition of the cities are sought after.
