With the advanced drafts of Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2 Work Programmes for 2025 now available online, it’s the perfect time to identify the most relevant call topics for your research and innovation projects. Our overview of the Cluster 5 draft Work Programme is an excellent starting point. However, what if none of the call topics align with your objectives, or the only suitable ones have deadlines in 2026, and you are eager to move forward with your exciting idea sooner? Fortunately, several other funding opportunities for climate, energy and mobility in 2025 could be the perfect solution. These include a variety of bottom-up funding schemes, such as the EIC Pathfinder and Transition programmes, MSCA Doctoral Networks, as well as additional top-down calls within the EU Missions. These avenues can offer alternative paths to help bring your innovative project to life without having to wait another year.
Alternative funding opportunities for climate, energy and mobilty research
Beyond Cluster 5, two EU Missions might offer opportunities for your research on climate resilience including the following.
- Adaptation to Climate Change Mission: This EU Mission focuses on developing and implementing actionable strategies to help EU regions, cities, and local authorities strengthen their resilience to climate change impacts. The draft 2025 Missions Work Programme includes six call topics, with a total budget of 113.4 million euros and a single deadline set for 24 September 2025.
- Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission: The draft 2025 Missions Work Programme includes three call topics aimed at involving cities in creating smart, sustainable solutions to enhance climate adaptability. The topics feature two innovation actions and one pre-commercial procurement call, with a total budget of 78 million euros.
- European Partnerships: Amongst the established European Partnerships, several address climate, energy and mobility topics, including the institutionalised partnerships on Clean Aviation, Clean Hydrogen and Europe’s Rail.
Given the complexity of navigating multiple Work Programmes to find suitable call topics, we have developed streamlined processes to assist you in identifying and securing the right funding opportunities.
How to find the best fit? Strategic grant planning for you!
There are several ways to identify suitable European funding opportunities. One obvious approach is to consult the draft Work Programme, conduct thorough web searches, and participate in Cluster-specific Information Days, typically organized by the European Commission a few months before submission deadlines. Additionally, focused workshops hosted by National Contact Points (NCPs) across various European countries can provide valuable insights. The EU Funding and Tenders Portal also offers an event calendar where you can find information on upcoming events – we would be delighted to meet you at one of these occasions!
