There are over 200 European funding schemes that provide grants, loans and other financial support for a broad range of activities. These include several initiatives to support research, development and innovation in universities, public and private research institutions as well as in the private sector, be it large industry or small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
Horizon Europe (Horizon EU) is the successor of Horizon 2020 (H2020), and is now the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever with €95.5 billion of funding available over 7 years (2021 to 2027) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. Its aim is to deliver on global challenges and industrial modernisation through concerted research and innovation efforts. Horizon Europe is the 9th EU Framework Programme and it is subdivided into three pillars (Excellent Science, Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness and Innovative Europe). Within these pillars, there are more than 40 so-called instruments ranging from Doctoral Networks for the training of early-stage researchers, the Pathfinders Open for future emerging and breakthrough technologies, 6 Clusters addressing gloabl challenges, such as Health, Civil Security for Society, Digital, Industry and Space, Climate, Energy and Mobility, and Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment to the SME-focused EIC Accelerator. Additionally, there are many other attractive funding schemes under the umbrella of Horizon Europe, such as the Joint Undertakings and Joint Technology Initiatives like the Innovative Health Initiative, or outside, such as EUREKA-Eurostars and ERA-NETs.

Researchers and companies from Switzerland and the UK can participate in most Horizon Europe instruments. However, there are some country-specific rules to consider during the proposal preparation. These include a different partner status in the EU portal, affect the budgeting and have several implications on the contents of the proposal document.
