EU Missions supporting the Green Deal – funding opportunities 2024/2025
20th June 2024 at 6:00 am
The EU Missions represent a novel funding instrument within Horizon Europe. Four out of the current five Missions are at the heart of the European Green Deal aimed at driving change through targeted and ambitious projects. The Missions are structured to address some of the most pressing environmental and societal challenges by leveraging national public and private investment and fostering cross-sector collaborations. By focusing on specific, measurable goals such as achieving climate-neutral cities, restoring our ecosystems and advancing sustainable agriculture, the EU Missions align research and innovation (R&I) efforts with the overarching objectives of the Green Deal. The common goal of all Missions is not only to accelerate progress towards a greener, more sustainable Europe but also to ensure that investments yield tangible and impactful results, driving systemic change and inspiring global leadership in climate action.
Open and forthcoming funding opportunities in the EU Missions
The EU Missions 2023-2025 Work Programme features the remaining call topics and indicative budgets of 123.97 million euros for the Climate call topics, 119 million euros for Cancer projects, 109.7million euros addressing Ocean calls, 101 million euros for the Cities projects and 134.50 million euros in the Soil area.
Adaptation to Climate Change
The Adaptation to Climate Change Mission aims to support at least 150 EU regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030. In line with the EU Adaptation Strategy, the Mission’s goal is to support less developed regions, cities and local authorities to better understand, prepare for and manage climate risks, become aware and prepared for the changing climate, and demonstrate climate resilience solutions. Proposal submissions of the 9 call topics close on 18 September 2024.
Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030
The Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030 Mission aims to design and adapt novel ways to protect and restore the health of marine and freshwater ecosystems. In line with the European Green Deal, the Mission’s objective is to progress towards a sustainable blue economy in the EU, harnessing the potential of our oceans, seas and coasts while ensuring their restoration, protection and health preservation. Proposal submissions of the 7 call topics close on 18 September 2024.
100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030
The 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 Mission aims to support the acceleration of green and digital transformations of the 100 EU cities and 12 cities from the associated countries. The Mission’s objective is to implement a climate neutrality plan that covers areas such as energy, buildings, industry, waste management and transport. Proposal submissions for the two calls “Changing urban spaces and mindsets to accelerate the transition to climate neutrality” with 4 call topics are due on 16 January 2025, while “Support for national, regional and local authorities” with 1 call topic closes on 5 September 2024.
A Soil Deal for Europe
The A Soil Deal for Europe Mission aims to establish 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030. The Mission’s main objectives are to protect and restore the health of EU soils, and promote sustainability for environmental, economic and social benefits of society. The Mission proposes to combine research and innovation, education, training, investments and demonstrations of good practices by using “Living labs” (places to experiment in a laboratory on the ground) and “Lighthouses” (places to showcase good practices). Proposal submissions of the 9 call topics close on 8 October 2024.
New European Bauhaus
The New European Bauhaus (NEB) introduces an exciting new funding opportunity that connects the European Green Deal to our living spaces and experiences through cross-cluster activities. The NEB fosters a multidisciplinary approach to creating beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive places, with a culturally and socially inclusive environment. Proposal submissions of the three call topics close on 19 September 2024, with an indicative budget of 17.8 million euros.
