Under the label of the European Green Deal, the European Commission combines far-reaching actions, policies and investments with the overarching goal of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. By turning climate and environmental threats into opportunities, the Green Deal supports economic growth while protecting resources at the same time.
The Green Deal is active in nine policy areas: Climate action, Clean energy, Protecting the environment and oceans, Agriculture, Transport, Industry, Research and innovation, Sustainable investments, and finally the New European Bauhaus. With the combined commitment of these areas, the European Green Deal can change today’s world, also addressing the UNs’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Appropriate funding is needed to achieve the EU’s ambitious objective. The European Green Deal Investment Plan (EGDIP) defines how the planned €1 trillion will likely be mobilised from different European and national sources.
In terms of research and innovation, by now the Green Deal objectives are deeply woven into the latest bi-annual Work Programmes of the Horizon Europe framework programme in almost every area of research. The European Commission declared that “all EU actions and policies will have to contribute to the European Green Deal objectives”. Therefore, whatever your research project, you need to address and consider its support towards a climate-neutral Europe.
